Our maps are designed to give a dynamic presentation of four stages in the history of the Istro-Romanian community, and to give a sense of the extreme situation of the modern language. We have established these stages on the basis of historical and modern data taken from various scholars and dialect surveys, and we have take into account not just villages but also hamlets in which there are or once were Istro-Romanians. Our maps reveal that not only the community and the language of Žejane are at risk of disappearing, but that the same is true of the southern community, which has gradually been losing its (relative) compactness.
